Des Moines Register debate transcript proves media bias against Alan Keyes
December 18, 2007

DES MOINES, Iowa — Below is an analysis, provided by a supporter of Alan Keyes, that reveals unmistakable bias toward Ambassador Keyes in the recent Des Moines Register debate in Iowa.

In sharing this analysis, the supporter wrote, "I watched the sham of a debate, and was thoroughly disgusted by the operation. As usual, Alan Keyes got the short shrift. I applaud him for standing up and fighting to get his message out. I just watched it again and came up with some interesting figures."

Those figures are as follows:

Number of questions asked of each candidate (including their individual video spots and free comments time):

Romney - 13
Giuliani - 12 + 3 follow-up
Hunter - 11 + 1 follow-up
Paul & Tancredo - 11 each
Huckabee - 10 + 1 follow-up
Thompson - 10
McCain - 9
Keyes - 7 + 1 follow-up (and one of those he had to ask the moderator if he could answer)

Actual time each candidate used to answer questions:

Romney - 10:13
Huckabee - 9:03
Giuliani - 8:17
Hunter - 6:51
Thompson - 6:31
McCain - 6:30
Tancredo - 6:28
Keyes - 6:12 (would have been only 5:05 if he had not pushed to answer the education question)
Paul - 5:34

Actual time allotted for each candidate to answer (following the limits set by moderator):

Romney - 7:30
Giuliani - 7:00
Huckabee - 7:00
Tancredo - 6:00
Thompson - 5:30
Hunter, Paul, and McCain - 5:00 each
Keyes - 4:30 (would have been only 3:30 if he had not pushed to answer the education question — and the moderator was only going to give him half the time allowed the others to answer it)

Number of times a candidate was interrupted or cut off by moderator:

Keyes - 12 (twelve!!) including 1 where he was under the time limit
Hunter - 6 (and 4 of those were on one 55 second answer)
Romney - 5 including 1 where he was under the time limit
Tancredo - 4 including 2 where he was just at the time limit
McCain - 4
Giuliani - 3 including 1 where he was under the time limit
Thompson - 2 (on one question)
Huckabee - 2
Paul - 1

Comment: "All of the candidates went over their allotted time most of the time and, to be fair, Keyes did use 70 seconds on a 30 second limit, but Giuliani was allowed 60 seconds on a 30 second question, and Romney was allowed 89 seconds on a 60 second question, 52 seconds on a 30 second question, and 49 seconds twice on 30 second questions; Huckabee was allowed 50 and 52 seconds on 30 second questions; Hunter was allowed 51 seconds on a 30 second question; and McCain was allowed 49 seconds on a 30 second question — ALL WITHOUT INTERRUPTION. Meanwhile, Keyes was interrupted for a 12 second overage, twice in a 16 second overage, twice in an 18 second overage, and three times in a 19 second overage."

The Keyes supporter added, "This is yet another outrageous example of the attempt to silence Alan Keyes. Hopefully, all who were watching realized what was going on and were able to glean, in spite of the little time Keyes had, something about what his message is and where we need the country to go."
